God will Not Leave You Comfortless

by J. M. Farro on April 25th, 2021

“I will not leave you comfortless; I will come to you.”  John 14:18 KJV

I was thinking about some loved ones of mine who had turned their backs on God, and had begun living apart from His purposes for them, when the Lord spoke to my heart.  He said, “Why don’t you stop dwelling on the mistakes your loved ones are making, and begin asking Me to comfort you and heal your broken heart?”  I realized then just how much I had been making myself miserable by focusing so much on my loved ones and their foolish choices.  I thought about Jesus’ words to His disciples when He told them, “I will not leave you comfortless; I will come to you.” (John 14:18 KJV)  And I began asking Him to comfort me.  I also thought about another promise from Scripture that I had memorized long ago: “[The Lord] heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds [healing their pain and comforting their sorrow].” (Psalm 147:3 AMP)  And I earnestly prayed for the Lord to heal my broken heart.

Since then, God has shown me why it’s so important for us to turn to Him for comfort and healing in the midst of our heartbreak.  When we are suffering because of the poor choices of our loved ones, we are likely to lash out at them, and to withhold forgiveness from them.  But by doing this, we are hindering our prayers, which our loved ones desperately need.  Not only that, but we are greatly damaging our witness, when they need to see Jesus in us.  We need to remember that our intimacy with God will help determine our influence in the lives of others.

David the psalmist wrote: “Although my father and my mother have forsaken me, yet the Lord will take me up [adopt me as His child].” (Psalm 27:10 AMP)  Whether you feel forsaken by a parent, a child, a spouse, or someone else, if you are a follower of Christ, then you have been adopted by Father God Himself. (Romans 8:15)  That means that you are never alone – not ever.  God Himself promises you: “I will never [under any circumstances] desert you [nor give you up nor leave you without support, nor will I in any degree leave you helpless], nor will I forsake or let you down or relax My hold on you [assuredly not]!” (Hebrews 13:5 AMP)  The Lord is always waiting for you to turn to Him for comfort and healing.  Don’t suffer in silence any longer, but call out to Him today!

Lord, remind me often that You promise to comfort and heal me when I call upon You in faith.  Help me not to dwell on the people or things that break my heart.  Instead, remind me to follow Your instructions by casting my cares, concerns, and burdens upon You – releasing the weight of them once and for all. (Psalm 55:22 AMP)  Thank You that as I rely on Your help to walk in love continually, I will prove to be a powerful witness for You!
