Dare to Ask for the Desires of Your Heart

by J. M. Farro on May 29th, 2010

When I found out that my son John’s wife, Amy, was pregnant with my first grandchild, I told the Lord that I didn’t care if it was a girl or a boy, only that I wanted it to be healthy. But if I were to be completely honest, I would have had to admit that I really wanted Amy to have a boy, because I knew it was what John really wanted. After Amy’s second ultrasound, her doctor and his staff were convinced that she was having a girl. From then on, I tried to prepare John for having a daughter, and I prayed that the Lord would help him to adjust.

Then God began to deal with me. I sensed His Spirit nudging me to ask for the desires of my heart in the situation, reminding me of Jesus’ words, “Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.” (John 16:24 NIV) So at the risk of seeming selfish, I prayed a prayer something like this: “Lord, You know how much John would like to have a son. I’m asking You to give him the desires of his heart by causing this child to be a boy. I know that even now, no matter what the doctor says, You can make it happen, and I ask that You do.” To be honest, my faith wasn’t perfect. I still had my doubts. And that’s why, when we found out this week that Amy is, in fact, having a boy, I felt ashamed. I had given a doctor’s report so much importance and credibility that I almost failed to ask the Lord for His divine intervention, and for what I had really hoped for in the situation.

As soon as John discovered that Amy was having a boy, he gave my mother the good news that he was naming his son after my father, who went to be with the Lord years ago. The joy that my mother, and our whole family, have already experienced because of this precious little boy, is enough to make me realize that God giving John the desires of his heart was not for him alone. So I tell you today as I write this: Dare to ask God for the desires of your heart. Those desires might very well have been planted by God Himself. If you will resist feelings of doubt, and ignore the voices of unbelief, you will receive your answer from the Lord, and you will give Him great glory!

Wow, this really spoke to me. I have been struggling about telling God my true desires, worried He will just take them away. Thank you for the encouragement. Also, I have been getting your Monday devos for about two months now and God has used each one to speak to me. Not one hasn’t been just what I needed. Thank you so much for allowing God to speak through you and for sharing it with others. Alisa

Thank you for the kind and encouraging words, Alisa. Trust God with the desires of your heart. If you are believing Him for something that is not His best for you, trust that He will make that known to you at the right time, as you seek Him first each day. Please know that I am praying for you!
