Faith for Healing

by J. M. Farro on November 1st, 2010

God has been teaching me recently about how important it is for me to believe that He wants me well and whole, whenever I pray for healing. In the Scriptures, the apostle James talks about how when a believer prays for wisdom, he must do it in faith, if he wants to hear from God. He says: “But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.” (James 1:6-8 NIV) What God showed me is that this faith principle not only applies when we’re asking Him for wisdom, but also when we’re praying for healing.

When we’re in pain in our bodies, minds, or emotions, it’s easy for us to doubt that the Lord wants us well and whole. Our symptoms can seem more real to us than God’s promises of health and wholeness. But if we will spend time in the Scriptures and meditate on how Jesus “went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil,” faith in His ability and willingness to heal us will spring forth. And when we are tempted to think that the Lord’s healing acts were limited to the past, we can meditate on Hebrews 13:8 (NIV), which says: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

I have walked with the Lord, and devoted myself to His Word, long enough to believe with all my heart that He will not fault us if we ask Him for healing when we need it. But I do believe that we must have faith in His ability, and His willingness, to heal us. As we partner with God for the building of our faith, and as we humbly ask for His healing touch, we can expect to receive from Him, and to begin thanking and praising Him in advance for the restoration that is surely on its way!
