The Destructive Power of Strife

by J. M. Farro on February 6th, 2022

“Where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.” James 3:16 KJV

On my way to a doctor’s appointment one afternoon, I was driving in heavy traffic and sensed the Holy Spirit leading me to pray a very specific way, in addition to my usual travel prayers.  “Lord, protect me and my vehicle from reckless and distracted drivers.”  A moment later, a man in the car behind me hit my vehicle’s bumper with his own.  Before I could react, I sensed the Spirit of God telling me, “Keep calm and pray for the other driver.”  As I obeyed, I saw in my rearview mirror that the other vehicle sustained no damage, and I knew in my heart that my own car was also unharmed.

Later that week, my husband, Joe, called me on his way home from work, and during our conversation, he yelled out that the driver behind him almost hit his car.  Immediately, I warned him to calm down, and to pray for the other driver.  Then I told him about my own experience on the road earlier that week.

On both of these occasions, the Lord reminded me of a nasty car accident I had been involved in years ago when I was yelling at my oldest son as I was driving him to the library.  Even though I had just finished praying Psalm 91’s protective promises over us, God allowed me to have that collision to teach me the dangers of strife.  He wanted me to know that anger, conflict, bitter disagreements, and strife can open the door to Satan and his dark forces, who are always eager to take advantage of every opportunity to “steal, kill, and destroy.” (John 10:10)

So I warn you today out of love and concern for you – avoid strife at all costs.  The Bible says that “where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.” (James 3:16 KJV)  Notice the word “every” in this verse, and don’t ever underestimate the destructive power of strife.  Do your best to walk in peace by the power of the Holy Spirit, and shut the door on the devil and his evil cronies every single time!

Lord, remind me often that You have called me to live in peace. (Colossians 3:15 NLT)  Empower me to walk in peace in my own home, and everywhere I go.  Make me sensitive and obedient to Your Spirit’s leading, so that I will remain under Your divine protection at all times.  Thank You that as I maintain a “no strife policy” with Your help, I will experience Your blessings in full measure in every area of my life!
