Don’t Stay Too Long

by J. M. Farro on May 19th, 2024

“Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.” Galatians 5:25 NLT

Some years ago, I began seeing a new dentist who came highly recommended to me by my doctor and a relative of mine, after seeking God and praying for His wisdom.

At first, I really enjoyed going to Dr. B, and I felt as though he did good work.  But then, I noticed that he and his dental assistant were constantly at odds, and I began to feel uncomfortable around them.  I didn’t feel like looking for another dentist again, so I continued seeing Dr. B, even though I couldn’t deny a nagging feeling in my spirit that it wasn’t a good idea.

Then, during one of my dental visits, Dr. B became so irritated by his dental assistant while he was working on my mouth, that he damaged some of my teeth.  I was appalled, and I insisted that he fix the damage right away, but he refused.  As I walked out of that office, I knew that it would be for the very last time.  And I knew in my spirit that I had stayed too long at this dental practice.

Over the years, I have had to learn the hard way how important it is to “follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.” (Galatians 5:25 NLT)  When the Lord tells us to stay somewhere, for our own good, we should stay there.  And when He tells us to move on, it’s best for us to leave.  This can apply to our relationships, our job situation, our career, where we live – or a doctor, dentist, or counselor we are seeing.  When we neglect to consult the Lord in any area of our lives, we are likely to forfeit His best in that area.

Every day, I like to pray, Lord, make me sensitive and obedient to Your Spirit’s leading in all things, so that I will always walk in Your perfect will and receive Your absolute best!  Today, seek the Lord about how this message might apply to your life, so that You won’t have to miss out on any of the extraordinary plans He has in store for you!

Lord, help me to follow Your Spirit’s leading in every area of my life.  Make me more and more sensitive to Your leading in all things, as I spend more time alone with You in Scripture reading and prayer.  Show me how to tune in to Your voice, and how to tune out the voices of the world.  Thank You that as I pursue Your will and purpose for my life, I will lay hold of all the blessings and breakthroughs that are my inheritance in Christ!
